Does The Welfare System Do More Good Or More Harm?

Does The Welfare System Do More Good Or More Harm?

Two statements were placed in a national survey. Which would you pick and why?

    1. The welfare system does more harm than good, because it encourages the breakup of the family and discourages work.

    2. The welfare system does more good than harm, because it provides assistance and training for those who are without jobs and are poor.

#1 is defilitely my response. There are people who CAN'T work and people who will NOT work. Most of what I have seen is nothing more than an abuse of the system, and the system does not work.

It should NOT be the job of the government to give money to support people. The job of the government is to protect its people, not provide for them, or give MY tax dollars to companies who mismanaged themselves nor to give money to people who cannot pay their bills because of irresponsible spending. There needs to be a MUCH tighter screening process on who gets welfare. Hand ups are a good thing, hand outs (bail outs) are a horrible waste of tax payers money.

It does more harm. Taking money from hard working people and giving it, by-in-large, to people who generationally continue to live off others is not good.

If we the government are going to support folks then they should be doing tasks such as cleaning the roads, cleaning parks, etc.

An don't get me started on women who keep having babies even when they are on government assistance. Increasing the burden on an already overburdened society.

On another note, when are we going to enforce the laws of our land in regards to illegal immigrants? Why should people be allowed into our country illegally? Why should local law enforcement not be called on to help immigration officials to rid our land of people who are breaking the laws?

I think some where btw the two is what is needed. The "system" almost prevents willing working folks to seek work, because doing so then prevents them for receiving assistance. A previous response mentioned "generational", there's no doubt that's a very problemaetic issue. Like most life good or bad learned behaviors, what we witness or learn from our upbringing we then carry that forward into our adult lives. In addition to basic teachings in schools, colleges, etc. everyday financial education needs to be provided, bsc it appears these along w/ morals, and basic right vs wrong common sense practices are NO longer taught and/or witness in most homes in the past 10 yrs or present.

It appears our current economic troubles in this country in itself may be a welcome teaching/learning tool as it relates to fiscal responsibility for individuals as well as corporate America.

I think too many folks take advantage of the welfare system, which costs American taxpayers untold of amounts of money.
I'm sure there are many people who need help from welfare that go on to become self-sufficient, however those that take advantage mess it up for people who genuinely NEED help.
If the government were to close loop holes that allow people to live on welfare for years and years, and force them to get training to be able to matriculate into the work force, then I would be for it. Until then, I feel that welfare is more harm on this country.
    In my humble opinion.

I'm not so sure how I feel about regular welfare, but I think I'm with Cal Thomas and others on bailout welfare.
