The law, sin, grace, and new life

So what does the following Scripture say to you? How do you interpret this passage? What life examples can you give to bring it alive? What truth is God revealing to us in this short passage?

    Romans 5:20-6:4

5:20 The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

6:1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. I had to read all of Romans through Chapter 5 to feel like I had an understanding of the scriptures you asked about.

To keep it brief, I believe that Paul's argument is that the law no longer applies because the point of the law was to point out how far we had strayed from God. Romans 5:21 says that the law could only bring about death, while the grace of God in giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sin gives us life everlasting. That gift of grace restores our relationship with God and frees us from worrying about being permanently removed from God's presence (death).

On the women's retreat, Carolyn told a story about one of your daughter's calling in the middle of the night saying that she needed to be picked up and that she wasn't where she was supposed to me. Carolyn rejoiced that she "got it." I think this is a great example of how God feels. He wants us to return to him, knows that we will stray because the original sin (Romans 5:12), but gives us His grace to come back to Him and restore our relationship with Him.

Some children are chastised so severely or disowned because of a transgression and they go on to lead a life of misery (living dead) or end their life too soon. Others are encouraged to recognize their mistakes, make things right, and get back on the path of righteousness.

Romans 5:2-4 says it is the trying times that produce perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Praise the Lord that we have a loving God full of grace who sets such a great example for us in his parenting to restore us and welcome us back into his convenant with open arms.

This blog is great. I don't have the luxury of going to a Bible study every week at a set time, but this encourages me to stay in the Word and think about what it says.
